El Destino y Philip Dick

«Un visionario entre charlatañes». Así definía el polaco Stanislaw Lem (el novelista de Solaris) a Philip K. Dick, uno de los más irregulares, prolíficos (44 novelas y unos 121 relatos breves), creativos y fascinantes escritores de ciencia ficción del siglo pasado, autor del cuento «El equipo de ajuste» en el que se basa Agentes del destino,

El cuento es quintaesencialmente dickeano, porque Dick, junto a su obra, exhibe una de las vidas más miserablemente tristes, de la historia de la literatura. Californiano, sobreviviente de una hermana gemela, hijo de padres divorciados, casado cinco veces con otros tantos divorcios, Dick arrastraba consigo una tristeza que lo llevaba a leer al mundo en términos ominosos. Se lo considera un autor de ciencia ficción, pero la misma etiqueta es engañosa.

Dick es un maravilloso dibujante de universos alternos, en los que la geografía y el tiempo adquieren categorías esencialmente diferentes de las del mundo en que le tocó vivir. En sus novelas, Hitler ha ganado la guerra (El hombre del castillo), los esquizofrénicos se mueven en un mundo acelerado (Tiempo de Marte) que les impide comunicarse con el resto de los seres humanos, los muertos hablan con los vivos aunque no están muertos en Ubik y toda su obra es una parafernalia de simulacros, mundos paralelos que se tocan con el mundo actual y seres poderosos que influirán en la vida de los humanos.

Dick era, además un paranoico que se veía perseguido por un estado totalitario en permanente acecho, creía que el comunismo podía tomar el control en cualquier momento y por si todo esto fuera poco, era un adicto a cuanta sustancia prohibida pudiera existir, lo cual daba pie a más de una fantasía mórbida.

La notoriedad le llegó con el mencionado «Hombre en el castillo alto» en 1963, pero ello no impediría que la pobreza siguiera ahogándolo. La vida fue injusta, como en una de sus ficciones.

Hacia 1980, el productor Michael Deeley se interesó por un libreto basado en el libro «¿Acaso los androides sueñan con ovejas mecánicas?», involucrando en el camino al director Ridley Scott. La película salió en 1982, con el título de Blade Runner, creando un movimiento de interés hacia Philip Dick y su obra. Pero Dick había muerto en 1981, a los 53 años. No muy sorprendentemente el cine lo visita con frecuencia.

«El vengador del futuro», con Arnold Schwarzenegger, se basaba en !Lo podemos recordar al por mayor, Impostor», volvía sobre el tema de los androides. «Minority report», de Spielberg, hablaba de policías precognitivos que se anticipaban a los delitos por cometerse, «El pago» de John Woo era sobre un técnico que borraba su memoria luego de cada trabajo cibernético, y «Next» con Nicholas Cage, volvía sobre el tema de la precognición.

Todas estas películas (y unas cuántas más) abordaban los universos de Dick a sabiendas de habérselas con un escritor que había adivinado los mundos virtuales que hoy nos rodean. Y todas ellas sin excepción, introducían una trampa inevitable para Hollywood.

Así como los universos de Dick son ominosos, plagados por entidades secretas, omnisapientes y represoras que persiguen a los protagonistas, los héroes de Dick son alfeñiques incapaces de defenderse, pobres diablos aterrados por fuerzas frente a los que no tienen ninguna opción, salvo la de su inteligencia. En su interpretación comercial esos héroes se han transformado en Harrison Ford, Schwarzenegger, Cage o Tom Cruise en un giro que probablemente irritara a su autor.

En ésta, el muchachito es Matt Damon, transformado en político de éxito -o no tanto-, acosado por el equipo de ajustes. El cuento corto tiene una ironía que no ha colado en el cine. El destino lo tiene todo planeado, pero a veces, como en toda empresa, ocurren desajustes mínimos en el espacio-tiempo, pequeños errores de montaje que sólo requieren de una banda de tipos vestidos de negro para ser corregidas. Si ésta fallara, ocurriría una catástrofe.

El cuento corto es una rareza de humor en Dick. Lamentablemente la película la transforma en una aventura romántica de joven y promisorio candidato que se enamora de la chica antes que se entrometan los agentes de ajuste en su camino, con lo cual la magia de Dick se diluye en una comedia romántica, no exenta de ritmo, pero no mucho más. Otro guiño triste del destino hacia un autor mayor, pocas veces homenajeado como se merece por el cine.

Both jazz and classical performances on DVD are getting better and better.  The quality of the video camerawork on this live jazz festival concert in Germany is some of the best I’ve had the pleasure of viewing.  It must have been shot in HD, and there are many closeups of each of the players.  You really feel as though you’re up on the stage with them.  Both the sounds and images are far better than anything you could expect by being there at the live concert. The provision of DTS surround with more music DVDs is part of the reason viewing these discs has become so satisfying. Sure, the straight PCM stereo option is very slightly more transparent, but the DTS surround option has great impact and puts you right in the middle of the hall as though you were there.  Only the most diehard two-channel anti-video fan would prefer to forego the wonderful images and surround sound for purist two-channel audio-only listening! But it’s there too if you want it.

I’ve been listening to some of these West Coast jazzmen for almost 50 years now but had never seen them in person or on the screen.  Pianist Pete Jolly looked younger than I had expected. And I recall having a favorite early prerecorded open reel tape featuring Conte Candoli on trumpet. The members of the All Stars made their debut at this Stuttgart festival, but they had never played together as a band before, had no written-out arrangements and little rehearsal time.  And you wouldn’t know it!  Would like to see a classical chamber music sextet perform under the same conditions.

The All Stars were celebrating the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Lighthouse All Stars, which was the group Kenton bassist Howard Rumsey assembled in 1951 for his jazz club in Hermosa Beach, California. At the festival they played Bernie’s Tune, which had been on a 1953 LP «Sunday Jazz at the Lighthouse,» as well as Shorty Roger’s tune «Diablo’s Dance,» which he had recorded the same year and which here became a solo vehicle for the nimble fingers of Pete Jolly. Teddy Edwards also wrote and played an original saluting Rumsey, titled «One for Howard.»  Bassist Berghofer shines on his solo during «Old Folks,» and the most modern sound from these mostly senior jazzmen comes with the closer of Miles Davis’ «Walkin,» which brings the sextet to a rousing climax.

Live in Japan is a triple live album by English rock group Deep Purple, released on CD in November 1993. The album was recorded over three nights in August 1972 in Japan. It’s a «Twenty-first anniversary collectors 3CD set» of Made in Japan. All 21 tracks were mixed in 1993.

The tracks on the album are mostly from their studio album Machine Head, which was released a few months earlier. According to the liner notes, unlike many live albums, there were «No studio overdubs, no splicing in of solos from other shows, and no fake applause.» Recorded live 15, 16 and 17 August 1972 in Osaka and Tokyo, Japan.
